Whistler Blackcomb saw the most snow since records began in November but will this record-breaking start to the season save Whistler from the phenomenon known as “Olympic Aversion”?

With headlines like “Olympic Aversion grounds Vancouver-bound flights” and some properties still not booked for the Olympics, there is no wonder why tourism officials and property owners in Whistler are bracing themselves.

Olympic aversion is caused by the fear that the Olympics will mean that there are large crowds and no or little accommodation available with extortionate prices. Over the Olympics (February 11 to 28, 2010) this is partially true. However, during the Olympic events, Whistler Blackcomb is still open and so while the crowds are watching the events, you have the rest of the 8,171 acres/3,307 hectares spread out over two mountains to ski and ride.

Olympic venues such as Turin, Salt Lake City and Beijing have all seen this aversion and so Whistler Blackcomb are doing everything they can from stopping this from happening by extending discounts to their ski tour agents and operators.

Here are some things you can take advantage of as a result of the “Olympic aversion”:

Early-bird ski passes can be bought up to January 15 2010 saving you up to 50% (in previous years this date was November 15). Rates can be viewed here.
Incredible deals on Whistler accommodation before and after the Olympics (February 11 to 28, 2010) as property owners and managers scramble to get their places filled.
The mountains will be quieter than normal away from the events and around the events.

We have seen that this Olympic aversion has affected the whole of the 2009-2010 winter season in Whistler with guests opting for other ski resorts in Western Canada all together even around the Olympic dates and so great deals are to be had throughout the season.

To make things even harder to attract more guests to Whistler this season, other ski locations such as Banff (Banff Norquay, Sunshine Village, Lake Louise) are offering the lowest rates we have ever seen on accommodation, lift passes and airport transfers making it all more tempting for the budget-conscious traveller to choose an alternative to Whistler this year which in this economy, who can blame them?

At this stage it seems the "Olympic Aversion" is happening in Whistler as predicted but the true extent will not be known until after this 2009-2010 winter ski season. For consumers, it means low accommodation rates and lift passes around the Olympic dates.

WHISTLER BLACKCOMB SMASHES RECORD FOR SNOWIEST MONTH EVER WITH OVER 5.5 METRES (18 FEET) OF SNOWFALL

November 2009 takes the podium as Whistler Blackcomb’s snowiest month in recorded history.

WHISTLER, BC, December 1, 2009 – As the calendar flips over, it’s now official that November 2009 will go down in history as the snowiest month on record at Whistler Blackcomb, dating back to when the collection of weather data began 30 years ago.

November 2009 has seen a total accumulation of 560cm (220 inches) of snowfall, nearly four times that of November’s average snowfall of 148cm (58 inches). This is an increase of more than 19 per cent over the previous record of 469cm (185 inches) set in January 2006, and a 22 per cent increase over January 1992’s record of 459cm (181 inches).

“Whistler is already known for reliable early season snowfall and this year’s record breaking start sets us up for an unbelievable season,” says Stuart Rempel, senior vice president of marketing & sales at Whistler Blackcomb. “To begin the season with a record breaker the likes of 5.5 metres of snowfall has certainly heightened the level of excitement in the resort, especially in this year, as we prepare to be a host venue for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympics Winter Games in February.”

And now, with the record broken, there is still an entire season of skiing and riding to look forward to. With a season that offers 192 days of skiing and riding, Whistler Blackcomb is already over half way towards the resort’s average annual snowfall of just over 10 metres (33 feet).

“With amazing conditions and stay and ski packages starting from $103 per person per night, there are some great deals to be had,” says Rempel. “Combine this with plenty of availability leading up to and following the Games, the new PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola which opened to incredible reviews last winter, and slopes that are expected be quieter than usual, and there couldn’t be a better time to visit Whistler Blackcomb.”

Both Whistler and Blackcomb mountains are now open, offering thousands of acres to ski and ride at North America’s largest ski resort.

Whistler Blackcomb on Track for Record Breaking Snowfall

After an early opening with plenty of fresh snow, Whistler Blackcomb prepares to open Creekside and Garbanzo Express on Whistler Mountain this weekend.

WHISTLER, BC, Wednesday, November 18, 2009 – The current storm system has blanketed the mountains with over 204 cm (80 inches) of fresh snow in the past week. Operations crews are hard at work preparing more lifts and terrain to open this weekend as conditions allow.

It may still be early in the season but don’t tell that to Mother Nature. With over 362cm’s (142.5 inches) of snow so far this month Whistler Blackcomb has more than doubled its average November snowfall of 148cm (58 inches). With almost two weeks left in the month, as well as over 100cm (40 inches) in the forecast for the next five days, Whistler Blackcomb is well on its way to the possibility of breaking the record of snow in the month of November, 416cm (164 inches).

“I’ve skied here for over 15 years and I’ve never seen this much snow so early in a season, it seems like every day’s snowfall is topping the last,” say’s Stephen Butt, Communications Coordinator and voice of the Snow Phone for Whistler Blackcomb. “We have already received one third of our average annual snowfall for the entire season and it’s only four days into the season, it’s unbelievable!”

With all this new snow, operations crews are hard at work getting ready to open Creekside Gondola and Garbanzo Express, in anticipation of what should be another amazing weekend. On Saturday, in addition to the Whistler Village Gondola, guests will be able to upload and download Whistler Mountain via the Creekside Gondola with access to Red Chair, Emerald Express, Franz’s and Garbanzo Chair.

The heavy snowfall does pose challenges for the operations crews opening the high alpine. With the current blizzard-like conditions in the alpine, crews have not yet been able to access this area of the mountain. Once crews can get to the alpine, lots of work will begin to prepare the area for skiing and riding which includes: avalanche control, and hazard marking and signage. Whistler Blackcomb appreciates guests’ patience as crews work to safely prepare the terrain before opening.

Though there is lots of snow early season conditions do apply. The Whistler Blackcomb Ski Patrol posted “Temporary Boundary” signs throughout the ski area indicating that the terrain beyond the ropes is not yet “ready” to ski or ride, even if that terrain is “normally” within our ski area boundary. Whistler Blackcomb would like to remind guests; though terrain may look appealing from where the ropes are, the terrain may include hazards such as ditches, exposed rocks etc. where more snow is needed before the terrain is considered safe. On this 12 day, 11 night tour, we are going to ski Sun Peaks and Apex Mountain Resorts, both located in beautiful British Columbia. It includes 6 nights with 5 days skiing at Sun Peaks and 5 nights with 4 days skiing at Apex Mountain.

Sun Peaks is the true meaning of ski-in and ski-out. It has something for everyone, from its 5 mile beginner run to the steeps of the Berfield chair, all contained in a warm and friendly mountain village setting. Apex Mountain Resort is one of Canada’s hidden gems with a great mix of terrain, lots of sun and lots of fresh dry snow.

Both resort have great “off piste” skiing within the resort area boundaries for the intermediate to advanced skier. The average area temperatures range from -4c to -10c (12 F to 25F). Sun Peaks and Apex Mountain both average 20 feet of snow a year - this is more snow than a 2 story house!

The ski tour would start with a Saturday arrival to Sun Peaks and end with a Wednesday departure from Apex Mountain Resort. Lake Louise Ski Resort has undergone some very positive changes since it's change in ownership in November 2008. The ski and board park is back this season, which is as fantastic as ever. They have also brought back the popular (formally know as) Torchlight descent. The new name for this event is the "Downhill at Dusk" with some slight changes made.

Let the Season Begin!

It's currently snowing in Whistler and we are excited to announce that Whistler Heli-Skiing is scheduled to start heli-skiing tomorrow, Wednesday, December 10th!

Yesterday Whistler Heli-Skiing were up in the helicopters taking a look at the alpine terrain. They found some good skiing in the Spearhead and outlying areas and are excited to strap on their skis and boards tomorrow for the first runs of their 28th season (2008-2009).

Weather looks good for flying on both Wednesday and Thursday with more snow expected to arrive on Friday and clearing skies on Saturday.

RCR Sells Part Ownership In Lake Louise; Locke Buys Back In

Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) has sold part of the Lake Louise Ski Resort in Alberta back to former owner Charlie Locke, The Industry Report has learned.

Papers were signed in late October, Matt Mosteller, Vice President of Business Development for RCR, told the IR today. The agreement transferred 50 percent of the ownership from RCR to Locke, who will assume the role of managing partner for Lake Louise.

“For me, this is not so much a business decision as a return to a fundamental passion,” said Locke in a written statement. “My family and I are very excited about getting back to the mountains and reinvesting our energies to ensure Lake Louise continues to be Canada’s favorite ski resort.”

Locke originally invested in Lake Louise Resort in 1974 and helped finance many of its first lifts. He bought into full ownership in 1981, running the resort as its sole owner for 20 years. Locke, who gained a legendary reputation for pioneering climbing routes in the Canadian Rockies, built his fortune through gas and oil leases and added Fernie, Kimberley, Mont Saint Anne, and Stoneham to his portfolio under the RCR umbrella.

RCR shifted ownership in 2001. Murray Edwards, RCR chairman, purchased a 50 percent interest in the company and paid off the balance in 2003, which transferred sole ownership of Lake Louise to RCR. Locke retired from the ski business, but continued ranching, real estate, resources, and recreation investments in The Locke Stock & Barrel Company, his holding company.

The new partnership between Locke and RCR will operate Lake Louise under a new company—The Lake Louise Ski Area Ltd. The resort will operate independently of, but associated with, RCR.

"Charlie will handle the day-to-day operations of the resort," Mosteller told the IR. "The partnership was the right thing for us to do and the right thing for Charlie."

Locke intends to invest additional resources in the resort. Initiatives high on Locke's to-do list include a focus on customer service, full dedication to snowmaking and high-quality grooming, and enhanced après ski options.

“We understand that it’s about the whole experience, and we’re committed to making sure skiers and snowboarders, kids, families, and young adults have the best time possible on the snow and after,” said Locke. “In addition to reintroducing a quality terrain park with all varieties of features, we’re also looking at more dining options, events, and entertainment.”

The shift in ownership will have no impact on 2008-09 ski products or rates. All multi-resort passes will have the same skiing and boarding privileges as before.

WHISTLER MOUNTAIN OPENED TODAY: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26 2008!
Blackcomb Mountain will follow tomorrow, Thursday, November 27

Whistler Blackcomb officials have announced that Whistler Mountain will open early on Wednesday, November 26. Whistler Mountain will open for daily operations with access to Emerald Express, Big Red Express and Franz’s Chair via the Whistler Village Gondola. On Thursday, the Creekside Gondola will open for the American Thanksgiving weekend, providing access to Whistler Mountain from the Creekside Base.

Blackcomb Mountain will join Whistler Mountain on the official opening day Thursday, November 27, with access to Solar Coaster Express, Jersey Cream Express and Catskinner Express. The Wizard Chair, Excalibur Gondola and Excelerator Chair will operate through the weekend for uploading.

“We’ve been blasting every snow gun on the two mountains to add to what Mother Nature has deposited in the past few weeks,” says Jodie McCutcheon, Whistler Blackcomb snowmaking manager. “Grooming staff have been working to manicure the snow to make for some great corduroy skiing and riding on opening weekend.”

Guest Relations in Whistler Village is currently open from 10am to 6pm. On Wednesday the village ticket windows and Village Guest Relations will be open from 8am to 7pm to assist guests. On Thursday, November 27, Creekside Guest Relations and Blackcomb Daylodge Guest Relations will open from 8am. Lift ticket pricing will be $55 on opening day.

“The 2008/2009 season is finally upon is, and we’re gearing up for Whistler Blackcomb’s most exciting season yet,” says Stuart Rempel, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Whistler Blackcomb. “With the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola grand opening set for December 12, and the one year countdown to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games taking place in February, we’re thrilled to kick this season off and start skiing!”

Guests should be aware that early season conditions apply and caution should be exercised. Terrain is recommended for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders and guests should stay within the ski area boundary, ski and ride with care and obey all mountain signage.

Jasper Marmot Basin - OPEN NOVEMBER 15 2008!

Jasper Marmot Basin ski area is open today, Saturday, November 15th!

This is the earliest opening date ever for Jasper Marmot Basin.

The "Eagle Express" high speed quad chairlift is operating and one intermediate run, "Tranquilizer", will open today with more runs in the lower area expected to open the following weekend. "Tranquilizer" is the most popular intermediate run in the lower portion of the mountain and has a vertical drop of almost 1,000 feet.

Marmot has received 60 cm of natural snowfall on the mountain so far this season. Lift ticket rates for opening weekend are reduced by 50% to $33.31 plus GST for adults, $26.67 plus GST for youth, students and seniors and $11.91 + GST for children 12 and under.

Longest High-speed Quad detachable chairlift in the Alberta Rockies!

Sunshine Village Open 2008

It’s early-season conditions. The Strawberry lift will open at 9 a.m., and two quads – WaWa and Standish – will be in operation by noon. Guests are advised to ski and ride with care, because terrain will be somewhat limited and there may be some natural unmarked hazards.

More runs are expected open Saturday, as crews finish preparing runs. Early season discounts apply, with Friday’s rate at $55.95, plus GST.

Banff-Lake Louise Resorts will be First to Open in Canada - NOVEMBER 8 2008!

Mt. Norquay and Lake Louise Ski Area will be the first two ski resorts to open in Canada! Both openings on Saturday 8th November will see lifts start at 9am, benefitting from the recent snowfall on Canada’s Protected Playground, Banff National Park.

The high speed Glacier Express Quad Chair and the Wiwaxy run at Lake Louise, and the Cascade Lift and Speculation run at Mt. Norquay will be open for skiers and riders to hit the earliest snow in Canada. The three resorts of Banff-Lake Louise; Mt. Mt. Norquay’s opening, earlier than predicted, will enable skiers and riders to hit the snow for weekends only while staff prepare the resort for full opening on 5th December. The dependable snow conditions from mid November to May are why Lake Louise hosts the first Men’s and Women’s World Cup races of the year – the only Canadian stop on the World Cup circuit.
